A Simple 3 Step Process to Release Emotion and Build Resiliency
Have you ever found yourself in an emotional loop? Where you can't seem to let go of a feeling that is overwhelming, frustrating, or hurtful?
Science now shows that an emotional trigger fills our bodies with a chemical response that really only lasts for 90 seconds. If it remains, it is because through our thoughts, we are consciously choosing to jump back on it's bandwagon and allowing the emotion to take another ride through our system.
But here is the trick (and the part that I love), that through 3 quick responses - that only take 90 seconds to complete - we are able to take control of our emotions. This includes those that feel so good and the ones that do not.
90 second practice to release an emotion and build resiliency:
Step 1. Acknowledge what you are feeling within your body. Where are you feeling this emotion? What does it feel like? Can you name the sensations that you are feeling?
Step 2. Label it. Give this emotion a name. Is it anger? Hurt? Fear? Joy? There are no right or wrong answers, just give it a name, this allows your mind to understand and categorize what you are feeling.
Step 3. Ride the wave. Once you have acknowledged and labeled it, you have built the mind and body connection, the trust, that allows it to leave your system. Take some deep breaths and allow the emotion to complete it’s 90 second cycle.
From there, YOU are in control. Choose a new emotion to feel and experience, embody what you WANT to feel.
To deepen this practice, explore the meditation below and please feel invited to comment or ask questions…what did you experience when you took control of your emotion?
